Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) for Eye Care

What is an FSA/HSA?

These are general terms for types of flexible accounts where a sum of money is automatically deducted from each paycheck that can be used to pay for health care items that aren't covered by insurance. The advantage of these accounts is that the sum isn't taxed, so you get more for your money. The amount is usually predetermined by you.

Can I use my FSA/HSA to purchase glasses?

You can use your account card to purchase different types of eye care products. While there are many different FSA/HSA programs, vision care items that are typically covered include:

  • The cost of eye examinations
  • Copayments and deductibles
  • Prescription glasses and sunglasses
  • Reading glasses
  • Eye drops
  • Contact lenses
  • Saline solution
  • Some programs allow the sum to be used for more expensive eye surgeries

If you do not have a "flex" card, you may have to pay the cost upfront and then apply for reimbursement from your program. To find out more about the specific benefits and policies of your FSA/HSA, speak with your provider.

What is the difference between an FSA and an HSA?

What is the difference between an FSA and an HSA?

The disadvantage of Flexible Saving Accounts is that the sum doesn't usually carry over into the new year, so you want to make sure that you spend the money you have saved each year. If you don't use it by a certain deadline you will lose it!

The advantage of Health Saving Accounts is that the money usually carries over, which allows you to accumulate money to purchase more expensive items and services.

Common Questions

Prescription eye drops are reimbursable through a flexible spending account (FSA) and health savings account (HSA). The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has regulations that rule out coverage for any medication that is not accompanied with a prescription, as such most over-the- counter eye drops (OTC) such as eye drops for red eye, OTC drops for eye allergies, and artificial tears are not eligible for reimbursement unless accompanied by a prescription. It should be noted that reimbursement for eye treatment medications cannot be claimed with a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA).

Summary

An FSA/HSA is an excellent way to save money on health care needs that often aren't covered by medical insurance. Speak with an HSA/FSA provider to find out which programs are available in your place of employment, and to determine which type of account is most suitable for your health care needs.
