Ortho-K as an Alternative to LASIK Surgery

Are you tired of constantly needing to update your glasses or contact lens prescription because your vision continues to deteriorate? If so, Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) may be an option worth exploring.

What is Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)?

Ortho-k is a method used by our optometrists in Santa Clarita to control and manage myopia, also known as nearsightedness. It involves wearing custom-made hard lenses at night while sleeping, which helps to reshape the cornea, leading to clearer vision throughout the day. Ortho-k is most commonly used for patients (usually up to the early 20’s) whose prescriptions continuously worsen over time. However OrthoK lenses are often used by those who want to be glasses and contact lens free during the day, as a surgery free alternative to LASIK.

The Benefits of Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

One of the main benefits of Ortho-K is that it is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure. It also allows patients to enjoy clear vision throughout the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Additionally, Ortho-K is reversible, meaning that if a patient decides they no longer want to use the lenses, their vision will return to its original state within a few weeks.

Ortho K can also provide benefits beyond improved vision. Up until our early 20’s we a child with myopia will continue to progress their minus prescription. Stabilizing the progression of myopia is essential as it can help reduce the risk of eye diseases associated with high myopia. The higher a child's myopia the higher their risk for serious vision conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment.

Ortho-K is also a great option for athletes or those who enjoy outdoor activities, as it eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses during physical activities.

Is Ortho-K a Suitable Alternative to LASIK?

One common question about Ortho-K is whether it can serve as an alternative to LASIK. While both procedures have similar goals in correcting vision, they differ significantly in how they achieve that goal. LASIK is a surgical procedure that permanently reshapes the cornea using a laser.  In contrast, Ortho-K uses specially designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea.

In terms of suitability as an alternative to LASIK, Ortho-K may be a good option for individuals who are not eligible for LASIK due to thin corneas or other contraindications. Ortho-K may also be a good option for individuals who prefer not to undergo surgery or who have active lifestyles that make wearing glasses or contact lenses inconvenient. Ortho-K is often used for younger patients who are still experiencing changes in their prescription, whereas LASIK is generally recommended for patients with a stable prescription for at least two years..

However, Ortho-K does have some limitations. The effectiveness of Ortho-K depends on several factors such as the severity of the refractive error, the shape of the cornea, and the patient's adherence to the prescribed wearing schedule. Ortho-K may also cause some temporary side effects such as glare and halos around lights, and it may not be suitable for individuals with certain eye conditions. It is important to note that the decision between Ortho-K and LASIK should be made in consultation with our optometrist. Please call at (661) 775-1860 to schedule a consultation.
